Brown Humpy- Dry Fly Fish Idaho
The Brown Humpy is a great fly for dry fly fishing Idaho in the summer seasons. One of the more prevalent hatches that come off in Idaho waters are the golden stone flies, and the Brown Humpy was created to imitate that exact hatch. The Brown Humpy should be fished like a stimulator pattern; you fish it when there are no hatches on the water, and you are attempting to lure one out of the depths. Dry Fly Innovations ties the Brown Humpy with the wing down, which will make it float like a cork on any stretches of water.
Dry Fly Innovations ties the Brown Humpy in several sizes (#16, #14, #12, and #10). One rule of thumb when dry fly fishing Idaho with a Brown Humpy is the higher the elevation the smaller the fly selection. If you are dry fly fishing a high mountain lake I would opt for a #16 or #14, but if you are Dry Fly Fishing the South Fork of the Boise River I would go with a #12 or #10. The Brown Humpy is effective on all species of trout, and as stated, you can dry fly fish Idaho at any elevation or on any river, lake, stream, or creek. The Brown Humpy is a hair pattern so gink or floatant will be required to fish it effectively. Grab your Brown Humpy’s and come dry fly fish Idaho this summer season.
Cricket- Dry Fly Fish Idaho
When it comes to the fly fishing world there is a very important category of flies that do not get the recognition that they deserve, and that group is the terrestrials. When dry fly fishing Idaho in the summer seasons there is one important terrestrial that you need in your in your fly box, the Cricket. The Cricket from Dry Fly Innovations is a fish catching machine. It is extremely difficult to walk a river or lake bank and not kick up hundreds of crickets. If you are dry fly fishing Idaho with the cricket it is most effective right along the edges of willow and grassy beds on the water. Typically what happens is the crickets will fall off the vegetation or the wind will blow them off and often times you can see trout hanging out on the edges waiting for them to hit the waters. The Cricket is one of the most valuable summer patterns you can use when dry fly fishing Idaho.
Dry Fly Innovations ties the Cricket in a size #10 2XL and #8 2XL. Dry Fly Innovations crickets are a big, crunchy meal that summer trout can’t resist. Its chubby moose hair body, antennae, legs and tail make this fly too real for a fish to pass up. The Cricket can be dry fly fished throughout Idaho at all elevations and on all stretches of water. This fly is very easy to handle when casting because it is a big heavy fly and if you are a beginner you will have no problems casting it out. A lot of times when dry fly fishing smaller flies your techniques have to be solid to get your line out straight without casting a blob of line that just sits on the water. But with the Cricket, this is not the case. The Cricket is effective on all species of trout. When you come to dry fly fish Idaho make sure you have Crickets and other terrestrials in your fly box because in this state these bug hatches are prolific in the summer seasons.
Blue Damsel- Dry Fly Fish Idaho
One of the most amazing flies I have fished in my dry fly fishing career is the Blue Damsel. If you are dry fly fishing Idaho in the high mountains on still water the Blue Damsel is very effective. Dry fly fish the Blue Damsel near grass beds, reed beds, or any vegetation hanging over the water. When the Blue Damsels are hatching you will actually see schools of fish move into the banks waiting for them to fall off the vegetation. The reason I state that the Blue Damsel is an amazing fly is because you will see the fish jump clear out of the water to eat these bugs. I have personally seen fish jump a foot out of the water to eat my Blue Damsel. It is a fun fly to use and a very successful one when the conditions are right.
Dry Fly Innovations ties the Blue Damsel in one size, and that is a #14 2XL on a down eye hook. The Blue Damsel is designed to float flat on the water to represent that it is spent. You will need to gink the Z lon that comes off both sides which represent its wings. The Blue Damsel is designed to dry fly fish Idaho in all elevations, but it needs to be on still water. High mountain lakes are ideal for the Blue Damsel. When you are dry fly fishing Idaho lakes and you see damsels start to appear, do not hesitate to tie on the Blue Damsel and fish it tight in against the banks. The Blue Damsel will fool all species of trout so come dry fly fish Idaho lakes and tie on the Blue Damsel; because it is an experience all dry fly fishing enthusiasts should have.
Blue Dun Stimulator- Dry Fly Fish Idaho
If you are coming to dry fly fish Idaho in the summer, or if Idaho waters are your native waters, let me introduce you to a fish catching machine. The Blue Dun stimulator is a dynamite fly at all elevations and on all species of fish. You can dry fly fish Idaho practically anywhere you desire and catch fish with the Blue Dun stimulator. It is constructed with very light gray materials and is meant to imitate a light gray caddis or a large gray mayfly. The Blue Dun stimulator is very easy to fish because it floats high on the water. This pattern is a hair fly, which means you will need to gink the hackle and the wing to make the Blue Dun stimulator fish effectively.
Dry Fly Innovations offers the Blue Dun stimulator in two sizes, a #16 2XL and #14 2XL. When you are dry fly fishing Idaho it is very important to pack your fly box with effective attractor patterns like the Blue Dun stimulator. There are several hatches that come off on Idaho waters like caddis’s and mayflies, and if you do not have those particular patterns in your fly box you will not be hooking fish. I have dry fly fished Idaho my whole life from local rivers to high mountain lakes and I always pack a Blue Dun stimulator with me because this fly is flat out nasty on all species of fish. When you dry fly fishing Idaho next summer, make sure you have an ace in your fly box like the Blue Dun stimulator.
Brown Emerger- Dry Fly Fish Idaho
This collection of emergers from Dry Fly Innovations always amazes me. They are small and simple, but fish eat them like hors d’oeuvres before a big meal. For every adult midge and mayfly hatch, there is an emerger that precedes them and they collect by the millions at the surface. When you see the dimple of a trout and not his nose, it’s “Emerger Time.” Identify the color and tie on a Dry Fly Innovations emerger and let the party begin! You can dry fly fish Idaho with the Brown Emerger effectively during any season of the year.
The Brown Emerger is tied on #22 2XL and #20. This particular fly is quite small and is a little bit more of a challenge to fish, but it can catch fish right along with any large stimulator. The Brown Emerger is designed to float just under the surface of the water, but you will always see the little bunch of hair coming off the eye of the hook which are designed to represent antennas that will develop later on a young bug. The Brown Emerger is perfect for dry fly fishing Idaho in the early spring and in the late fall/winter. This fly will catch all species of trout and can be used at any elevation on any river, stream, or lake. When you are dry fly fishing Idaho and you find yourself in a hatch that is not on the surface put a Brown Emerger on and soon you will be feeling the burn as you pull in one trout after another!
Gray Mayfly- Dry Fly Fish Idaho
To dry fly fish Idaho successfully, you must own the finest, most perfect, most realistic, most precise mayflies. The collection of mayflies that Dry Fly Innovations carries have been masterly crafted after over 40 years of research and development (my term for fishing). We believe that fish target on a mayfly by the bug’s abdomen and the wing, and a subtle difference in either is the determining factor in a take. The Gray Mayfly is constructed with a single upright wing that has been hand carved to match the actual mayfly in the wild, and a biot abdomen which gives it a striated body.
You can dry fly fish Idaho in all elevations and on all species of fish with the Gray Mayfly. In the higher elevations it imitates a mosquito hatch and in the lower elevations it matches all the little gray mayflies that come off. The Gray Mayfly is essential to any fly box if you are coming to dry fly fish Idaho, because Idaho waters are notorious for gray mayfly hatches. You can use the Gray Mayfly from early spring through the summer and into the early fall. The Gray Mayfly is a very versatile fly and one that I would highly recommend you have when you come to dry fly fish Idaho.
Dry Fly Innovations ties the Gray Mayfly in two different sizes, a #18 and in a #16. It also comes in two separate wing colors, quill and clear. When you are dry fly fishing Idaho with a Gray Mayfly and the sun is shining bright, go with the clear wing. When you are in overcast conditions, in shade, or heading into dark, the Gray Mayfly with a quill wing would be your choice. Come dry fly fish Idaho with a Gray Mayfly and experience mayfly fishing at its best.
Mountain Emerger Black- Dry Fly Fish Idaho
Dry fly fishing Idaho would not be complete until you ventured up into the high country where the elevations are over 5000 feet. Idaho has some of the most pristine high mountain lakes that are brimming with cutthroats, rainbows, and eastern brooks. Dry fly fishing high mountain lakes is truly an experience everyone should have; the scenery alone is worth any hike. Dry Fly Innovations invented the Mountain Emerger Black specifically for high mountain lakes and streams. This fly is any angler’s ace in the hole because you can tie it on anytime and land fish. The Mountain Emerger Black is part of the mayfly family and it is very predominate in Idaho mountain ranges.
The Mountain Emerger Black comes in two sizes, #18 and #16. This fly is meant to imitate a bug coming out of its shuck just below the water surface. It is constructed with a beautiful striated body, with a hackle loop to mimic a wing that will grow when it reaches the surface. The Mountain Emerger Black has a sleek silhouette with a tail and a fan shape on its head, which imitates antennae. To fish this fly effectively you will need to gink the hackle tail, the fan in front, and the wing loop. The Mountain Emerger Black is designed to sit low on the waters surface, but it can also be fished just under the waters surface. The trout will take it either way, so be on the lookout for those telltale dimples that indicate a submerged take.
Come dry fly fish Idaho in the high mountain ranges and tie on a Mountain Emerger Black. Just be sure you’re ready for a serious rumble with any of the species of trout you find up there. We at Dry Fly Innovations have had a lot of success with this fly and it is quickly becoming one of the go to flies to fish in the high country. Pick up your Mountain Emerger Blacks and join in on the fun when you come to dry fly fish Idaho in the scenic mountain ranges.
Olive Brown Humpy- Dry Fly Fish Idaho
The Olive Brown Humpy fly was created out of frustration with the old standard humpy patterns throughout my years of dry fly fishing Idaho. I always loved the fat bodies, hair backs, and their awesome floating qualities, but they have a real problem with hook-down wing-up delivery. We at Dry Fly Innovations threw a monster wedding party between humpies and stimulators and their first born will catch more fish than a gill net, and on top of that, it floats perfectly. The Olive Brown Humpy does not imitate anything in the wild and it fishes the same way as a stimulator where you are trying to attract the fish. If the Olive Brown Humpy resembles anything it would be the Olive Brown Stone, but the color combination would remind you of Black Gold (see the blog Black Gold- Fly Fish Idaho).
The Olive Brown Humpy is tied on a #10, #12, #14, and a #16. You can dry fly fish Idaho at all elevations with the Olive Brown Humpy, but keep in mind, the higher the elevation the smaller the Olive Brown Humpy you will fish. If you are coming to dry fly fish Idaho the Olive Brown Humpy is most effective in late spring and early summer. You can catch all species of trout with the Olive Brown Humpy and if you find yourself on the river and there are no hatches coming off, this is the perfect fly to tie on and attract trout to the surface. This is a very easy fly to fish because of its perfect balance of hook-down wing-up and you will only need to gink the Olive Brown Humpy on the under wing.
When you are planning your fishing trips for next year and you are coming to dry fly fish Idaho in the late spring or early summer make sure you are packing some Olive Brown Humpies in your fly box. The Olive Brown Humpy is a custom design from Dry Fly Innovations, which means you can only find this fly in our store. So come dry fly fish Idaho with the Olive Brown Humpy and we will be hearing you say, “There he is!”
Bee (Yellow Jacket) – Dry Fly Fish Idaho
The Bee is one of the more unique flies that we sell at Dry Fly Innovations. It is not a particular fly that one would head to the destination with and dry fly fish exclusively. The Bee is used in certain scenarios where you might be having refusals or fish are just not taking your other flies. It is a great go to fly when the fish are being picky. The bee is the perfect assault fly when you need a hatch breaker while dry fly fishing.
The Bee (Yellow Jacket) is used in high elevations and can be used on lakes, rivers, or even small streams. It does not catch rainbows, but it is an absolute nightmare for cutthroats and eastern brooks. I have dry fly fished at high elevations from northern Idaho to Montana and it has never disappointed me in the least. This fly is very appetizing for cutthroats and eastern brooks because it is tied with a plump tapered body and it is striated to match a real bee in the wild. It has a hackle tip with a down wing and it can be fished on top of the water dry, or it can be fished just underneath the film surface of the water. It does take a little “gink” to keep the fly floating, but when applied it sits up high and the fish cannot let it pass without a taste.
Dry Fly Innovations offers the bee in a #16 and #14. If you are planning a destination to dry fly fish Idaho, Montana, or the Northwest in high elevations you will want to have a couple bees in your fly box. You never know when you will be in stubborn fish and the bee is the perfect weapon of choice to put the sting on them!
Fall Caddis – Dry Fly Fish Idaho
I was dry fly fishing in northern Idaho on the Lochsa River three years ago and it was in the early fall. I kept seeing big caddis’s float by me and they looked as though they were on a #10 or #12 size hook. As I was fishing I would see little mouths come out of the water and sip these giant caddis; it was as if the cutthroats could not get enough of them. It was on this dry fly fishing trip we at Dry Fly Innovations constructed our version of the Lochsa’s Fall Caddis. The beautiful part of using the Fall Caddis is that you can dry fly fish throughout Idaho and effectively catch fish from the Lochsa in northern Idaho to the South Fork of the Boise River and even on rivers in eastern Idaho.
The Fall Caddis is a trout magnet in the fall of the year when the fish feel winter coming and they are looking for a big, juicy meal. With a blended body dubbing, front tentacles, and high wings, it is the perfect match to the hatch of giant caddis. This fly catches every trout in all waters, but especially cutthroats. We tie this fly in size #8 and on #10. The Fall Caddis does require some “gink”, or “floatant”, to make it fish effectively, but the beautiful part of using this fly is that it sits high on the water and is quite easy to use and to dry fly fish with. The next time you are dry fly fishing Idaho in the fall make sure you have the Fall Caddis in your fly box because you never know when you will be in a big fall caddis hatch.
When dry fly fishing the Fall Caddis there is fairly short window in which this fly is super effective, and that is late in the summer and into the early fall. The Fall Caddis is not like a stimulator where you are trying to attract fish to your fly, this fly has a particular hatch that will come off when conditions are right. I have personally caught several trout with the Fall Caddis and judging by some our clients emails they have had a great time dry fly fishing this fly. The next time you are dry fly fishing Idaho in the late summer or early fall pick up a Fall Caddis and watch the magic happen!!
Fall Caddis
It's a trout magnet in the fall of the year when the fish feel winter coming and they are looking for a big, juicy meal. Blended body dubbing, front tentacles, and high wings, it is the perfect match to the hatch giant caddis. This fly catches every trout in all waters, but especially cut throat.
