Goose Biot Emerger- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

Friday, January 8, 2010
posted by geoff

The Goose Biot Emerger from Dry Fly Innovations is one amazing fly fishing fly.  It is very simple in design but it will hook fish like a gill net.  The Goose Biot Emerger is designed to float upside down in the sub surface and the Z Lon that protrudes off the eye of the hook is the only part you see out of the water.  The Goose Biot Emerger can be dry fly fished throughout Idaho at all mountain elevations and low river elevations.  Anywhere that there is a trico mayfly hatch the Goose Biot Emerger will be an effective fly.  You can dry fly fish Idaho with the Goose Biot Emerger in the summer, fall, and into the winter seasons.  If I had to choose one emerger that I had to have in my fly box at all times the Goose Biot Emerger would be that fly.

Dry Fly Innovations ties the Goose Biot Emerger in two sizes (#22 2XL and #20).  The Goose Biot Emerger comes equipped with a biot body that gives this fly an amazing striated body that trout cannot resist.  You can dry fly fish Idaho at all elevations and catch all species of trout that Idaho has to offer.  The Goose Biot Emerger is unique in the way it sits in the water because the entire hook sits under the water except for the Z Lon that is over the eye.  Come take an adventure with the Goose Biot Emerger and dry fly fish Idaho this fishing season of 2010.

Black Humpy- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

Thursday, January 7, 2010
posted by geoff

Whenever I am dry fly fishing Idaho I always like to have a few flies that are my aces in the hole, and the Black Humpy is definitely one of them.  The Black Humpy from Dry Fly Innovations is by far one of the best stimulator patterns when trying to fool smart fish.  This fly does not imitate any hatches per say, but it does have striking resemblances to a great terrestrial pattern called the beetle.  You can effectively dry fly fish Idaho with the Black Humpy from the high mountain elevations to the low level rivers.  The Black Humpy is a fat, plump, and meaty morsel that trout just cannot resist.  It has the standard Dry Fly Innovations profile on the water with the hook down and wing up, which makes it float perfect in the water.  The Black Humpy is a great fly to dry fly fish Idaho with all through the summer fishing season and into the early fall.

Dry Fly Innovations ties the Black Humpy in four sizes (#16, #14, #12, and #10).  I mentioned earlier that you can dry fly fish Idaho at all elevations but there is one rule of thumb to this approach.  If you are in the high country of Idaho, I would recommend tying on a #16 or #14, using the smaller sizes will bring you more success.  If you are coming to Idaho to fish the South Fork of the Boise or the Big Wood, I would go with a #12 or #10.  The Black humpy can effectively be fished on lakes, rivers, streams, or creeks, which makes this fly another awesome universal fly that you can have on you at all times.  You can also catch all species of trout that Idaho has to offer with the Black Humpy.  Come have an amazing fly fishing experience with the Black Humpy when you come to dry fly fish Idaho.

This fly has become one of the best attractor flies I have ever fished at any elevation. You should own this fly in every color offered.

Brown Stripped Peacock Mayfly- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

One of the great summer time hatches that come off in Idaho are the mahogany and march brown mayflies.  To match these hatches, Dry Fly Innovations has tied up a masterpiece in the Brown Stripped Peacock Mayfly.  The Brown Stripped Peacock is an awesome summer time fly that can be effectively dry fly fished throughout Idaho.  The real beauty of the Brown Stripped Peacock is it was created to imitate all large brown mayflies that would be hatching.  With this being said, as long as there are brown mayflies hatching you can tie on a Brown Stripped Peacock and catch fish.  The Brown Stripped Peacock is primarily dry fly fished on low elevation rivers, but it can also be dry fly fished in Idaho high mountains as long as there are brown mayflies hatching.

Dry Fly Innovations ties the Brown Stripped Peacock in two sizes (#16/#14) and two wing styles (clear/quill).  The Brown Stripped Peacock comes equipped with a peacock hurl body, which gives this fly a gorgeous striated body that matches the real mayfly in the wild.  You can dry fly fish Idaho with the Brown Stripped Peacock Mayfly and catch all species of trout.  Like the previous blogs about Dry Fly Innovations mayflies, the rule of thumb with dry fly fishing two styles of wings is in the shade (overcast, evening) quill wing is your choice.  If it is a beautiful sunny day than strap on the Brown Stripped Peacock clear wing and get ready to rumble.  If you are coming to dry fly fish Idaho in the summer seasons make sure you are properly equipped to catch fish and have a couple Brown Stripped Peacock Mayflies in your box.

Blue Dun Mayfly- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

One of the real pride and joys of all the dry flies that we tie at Dry Fly Innovations are our mayfly patterns. Our collection of mayflies have a signature single upright wing that is hand-carved to make the flies look like the real thing on the water. The Blue Dun Mayfly is no exception. It is a great low river elevation fly that matches the bluish-gray mayfly hatch. You can dry fly fish Idaho with the Blue Dun Mayfly from the early summer clear into the fall. Anytime that you are dry fly fishing Idaho and you start to see the bluish-gray mayflies start to hatch, that is your cue to strap the Blue Dun Mayfly on and get ready to rumble. The Blue Dun Mayfly will catch all species of trout that Idaho has to offer, but this fly will not be effective in the high country because there is no real bluish-gray mayfly hatch that come off up there. It is an excellent fly to dry fly fish the South Fork of the Boise River, Owyhee River, or any other blue ribbon river in Idaho.

Dry Fly Innovations offers this fly in two sizes (#18/#16) and in two wing styles (clear/quill). One of the rule of thumb I use when fly fishing Dry Fly Innovations mayflies is when the sun is out the clear wing is the right choice. The sun glistens through the wing and sells this fly to any fish that it floats past. As you head into evening or it is an overcast day, the quill wing would be my choice. The Blue Dun Mayfly comes equipped with a blue dun biot that gives this fly that beautiful striated body that matches the real mayfly. If my summer vacation was bringing me to dry fly fish Idaho I would definitely have the Blue Dun Mayfly in my fly box, because I guarantee you throughout the day, there will be a bluish-gray mayfly hatch coming off.

Biot PMD Cripple- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

posted by geoff

Dry Fly Innovations has spent this last summer of 2009 rigorously researching and developing a new fly called the Biot PMD Cripple.  This is a great fly to dry fly fish Idaho with in the mid to late summer or whenever there is a PMD mayfly hatch happening.  The Biot PMD Cripple is designed to imitate a large PMD mayfly that is struggling or wounded and cannot get into its complete adult stage.  We have designed this fly to sit very low on the surface film with a great profile that mimics the real struggling PMD.  The Biot PMD Cripple is tied with an elk hair wing, which will float like a cork on the surface film of the water.  This is a great fly and has been proven to be effective on the South Fork of the Boise River, Owyhee River, and the South Fork of the Snake River.  Awesome fly to dry fly fish Idaho.

Dry Fly Innovations ties the Biot PMD Cripple in two sizes (#16 2XL and #14 2XL).  The Biot PMD Cripple is primarily used in low rivers, streams, and tail waters.  There are no real PMD hatches in the Idaho high mountains so this fly would not be very effective but dry fly fish Idaho on low rivers and you will have a fishing trip of a lifetime.  The Biot PMD Cripple will catch all species of trout that are on Idaho’s low rivers.  It does come with a hair wing so gink will be a necessity for this fly to float effectively for you.  Grab your Biot PMD Cripple and come dry fly fish Idaho in the mid to late summer and you will be saying, “There he is!”

Brown Midge- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

If you are looking for a dynamite fly to use in the late fall and early winter seasons than look no further than the Brown Midge.  Do not let the small size of the Brown Midge deceive you; it packs a punch like Mike Tyson on trout.  Midge hatches are what the trout eat to survive in cold seasons when there is no caddis, hoppers, or stone flies.  When dry fly fishing Idaho the most prolific hatch that comes off in the late seasons are brown midges and Dry Fly Innovations has one of the best Brown Midge’s on the market.  The Brown Midge is very easy to fish because it has a white wing that sticks up on top of the water; though it is small in size you will always be able to see the white wing.  You can dry fly fish Idaho at all mountain elevations and on all low elevation rivers with the Brown Midge.  The other important aspect for the Brown Midge is you can fish it on lakes, rivers, streams, and creeks.  The Brown Midge is like having an ace in the whole (your fly box) because at any time you can tie this fly on and catch fish.  The Brown Midge is an all around great universal fly that will land big trout.

Dry Fly Innovations ties the Brown Midge in two sizes (#22 and #20).  The Brown Midge is tied with a peacock curl, which gives this fly an amazing striated body just like what you would see in the real hatch.  You can dry fly fish Idaho with the Brown Midge and catch all species of trout that Idaho has to offer.  I cannot stress it enough about the size of the Brown Midge; it is small but it will land trophy trout out of any lake, river, or stream.  Come dry fly fish Idaho in the late fall early winter and experience one of the greatest phenomena’s in the fly fishing world and that is catching big fish with a tiny Brown Midge.

Ginger Mayfly- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

If you are coming to dry fly fish Idaho in the mid summer fishing season I have the perfect low elevation river fly in the Ginger Mayfly (dry fly fish Idaho).  This is a great fly that has proven itself time and time again from the South Fork of the Boise River, Silver Creek, Big Wood River, and the Owyhee River.  The Ginger Mayfly is a match the hatch type of fly, which means you would only fish this fly when there is a light color mayfly coming off.  The Ginger Mayfly is not intended for use in the high country because there are very few light colored mayflies that come off at that elevation.  When you are dry fly fishing Idaho I would highly recommend you having a couple of Ginger Mayflies in your fly box because you never know in the summer seasons when their will be a light mayfly hatch coming off.

Dry Fly Innovations ties the Ginger Mayfly in two sizes (#18, #16) with a quill wing.   The Ginger Mayfly comes equipped with the standard Dry Fly Innovations single upright wing and the body is spun with stripped peacock, which gives it a beautiful striated body.  You can effectively dry fly fish Idaho on low elevation rivers or streams and it will catch all species of trout that Idaho has to offer.  Come enjoy the Ginger Mayfly this summer and come dry fly fish Idaho, the rivers are calling out your names.
