Gray Hatching Emerger- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

Wednesday, December 9, 2009
posted by geoff

When you are dry fly fishing Idaho in the summer seasons there is a prevalent hatch that comes off and that is a gray drake.  One of the best emergers I have ever used is Dry Fly Innovations Gray Hatching Emerger.  The adult gray drake is just like any mayfly where before it comes an adult there is an emerger stage, and if you tie on the Gray Hatching Emerger,  you could have a fishing day to remember.  The Gray Hatching Emerger is a fly where you have to be in that particular hatch because it is not fished like a stimulator or a humpy.  When you are dry fly fishing Idaho and you start to see little gray drakes appear on the waters surface; that is your key to tie on the Gray Hatching Emerger.

Dry Fly Innovations ties the Gray Hatching Emerger in two sizes (#16 2XL and #14 2XL).  The Gray Hatching Emerger can effectively be dry fly fished throughout Idaho at all elevations, but where I have had the best success has been on streams and rivers.  This fly has a low floating, belly down style that is very easy to fish because of the CDC combined with several turns of hackle.  The Gray Hatching Emerger is a nightmare to tie, but is a dry fly fishermen’s dream.  This fly will catch all species of trout so if you plan on dry fly fish Idaho next summer, grab your Gray Hatching Emergers.  You will be saying “There He Is!”

Trico Biot Dun- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

One of the most universal flies that Dry Fly Innovations has created is the Trico Biot Dun mayfly.  It is very tiny in stature but is a very deadly fly to dry fly fish Idaho.  The Trico Biot Dun can be effectively dry fly fished at all elevations throughout Idaho and on all species of trout.  You can fish the Trico Biot Dun on all rivers, lakes, streams, or creeks.  You can dry fly fish Idaho with Trico Biot Dun in the early spring time, intermittently throughout the summer, late summer, early fall, and into the winter.  You can virtually dry fly fish Idaho at any time and strap the Trico Biot Dun on and catch fish.  That is why it is one of the most versatile flies that Dry Fly Innovations has to offer.  Idaho has a vast mayfly hatch at all elevations and the Trico Biot Dun is an actual hatch, and when you see it come off, that is when you would dry fly fish this particular fly.

Dry Fly Innovations ties the Trico Biot Dun in two sizes (#20, #18) and it comes in two styles of wings (quill and clear).  We at Dry Fly Innovations tie our mayflies quite differently than most in that they all come with our signature single upright wing that is hand carved to match a mayfly’s wing perfectly.  The Trico Biot Dun has a beautiful striated body that is made from the biot of a goose wing and that with the single upright wing are the secret to the life quality of this fly.  When you are planning to come dry fly fish Idaho at any season, I would highly recommend having a few of the Trico Biot Dun mayfly in your fly box.  It can be the perfect fly to have on the end of your tippet when the Trico’s are popping.

Brown Humpy- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

Monday, December 7, 2009
posted by geoff

The Brown Humpy is a great fly for dry fly fishing Idaho in the summer seasons.  One of the more prevalent hatches that come off in Idaho waters are the golden stone flies, and the Brown Humpy was created to imitate that exact hatch.  The Brown Humpy should be fished like a stimulator pattern; you fish it when there are no hatches on the water, and you are attempting to lure one out of the depths.  Dry Fly Innovations ties the Brown Humpy with the wing down, which will make it float like a cork on any stretches of water.

Dry Fly Innovations ties the Brown Humpy in several sizes (#16, #14, #12, and #10).  One rule of thumb when dry fly fishing Idaho with a Brown Humpy is the higher the elevation the smaller the fly selection.  If you are dry fly fishing a high mountain lake I would opt for a #16 or #14, but if you are Dry Fly Fishing the South Fork of the Boise River I would go with a #12 or #10.  The Brown Humpy is effective on all species of trout, and as  stated, you can dry fly fish Idaho at any elevation or on any river, lake, stream, or creek.  The Brown Humpy is a hair pattern so gink or floatant will be required to fish it effectively.  Grab your Brown Humpy’s and come dry fly fish Idaho this summer season.

Humpilators

This fly has become one of the best attractor flies I have ever fished at any elevation. You should own this fly in every color offered.

Cricket- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

When it comes to the fly fishing world there is a very important category of flies that do not get the recognition that they deserve, and that group is the terrestrials.  When dry fly fishing Idaho in the summer seasons there is one important terrestrial that you need in your in your fly box, the Cricket.  The Cricket from Dry Fly Innovations is a fish catching machine.  It is extremely difficult to walk a river or lake bank and not kick up hundreds of crickets.  If you are dry fly fishing Idaho with the cricket it is most effective right along the edges of willow and grassy beds on the water.  Typically what happens is the crickets will fall off the vegetation or the wind will blow them off and often times you can see trout hanging out on the edges waiting for them to hit the waters.  The Cricket is one of the most valuable summer patterns you can use when dry fly fishing Idaho.

Dry Fly Innovations ties the Cricket in a size #10 2XL and #8 2XL.  Dry Fly Innovations crickets are a big, crunchy meal that summer trout can’t resist. Its chubby moose hair body, antennae, legs and tail make this fly too real for a fish to pass up.  The Cricket can be dry fly fished throughout Idaho at all elevations and on all stretches of water.  This fly is very easy to handle when casting because it is a big heavy fly and if you are a beginner you will have no problems casting it out.  A lot of times when dry fly fishing smaller flies your techniques have to be solid to get your line out straight without casting a blob of line that just sits on the water.  But with the Cricket, this is not the case.  The Cricket is effective on all species of trout.  When you come to dry fly fish Idaho make sure you have Crickets and other terrestrials in your fly box because in this state these bug hatches are prolific in the summer seasons.

Golden Stone- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

Dry Fly Fishing Idaho in the summer seasons is truly one of the greatest experiences one can have.  There are thousands of high mountain lakes, rivers, streams, and creeks in which you can dry fly fish.  In the summer seasons of dry fly fishing Idaho one of my favorite flies to use is a Golden Stone.  Golden Stones are prevalent in the summer seasons in Idaho and it is extremely difficult to walk a river bank and not see hundreds of them lying near or on the water.  Dry Fly Innovations has created one of the best Golden Stone flies I have ever used.  Golden Stone is equipped with an extended tail, dark hair back, ribbed abdomen and front antennas.  It has a striated body on the under shell that matches the true golden stone perfectly.  I have used several different varieties of golden stones from different fly tiers and they have all ended up the same way; broken and worn out after a couple of fish.  Dry Fly Innovations takes great pride in the construction and workmanship of our flies and I challenge any dry fly fisherman out there to wear one out.  You will pop it off or lose it in a fish’s mouth before you wear out a Dry Fly Innovations Golden Stone.

Dry Fly Innovations ties Golden Stone in three sizes #12 2XL, #10 2XL, and a #8 2XL.  You can dry fly fish Idaho in any weather condition with the Golden Stone and you can catch all species of trout.  Golden Stone can be fished in hard water, soft or slack waters, and even on big slicks.  Golden Stone will float like cork in the water because of the way it is constructed but it is a hair pattern, which means you will need to gink this fly.  When you are planning your next trip to dry fly fish Idaho it is essential that you have some Golden Stone patterns in your fly box.

Biot Midge- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

One of the great fishing flies to use when dry fly fishing Idaho in the early spring and late fall/ winter seasons is the Biot Midge.  It is small and inconspicuous in stature but it catches fish like it is going out of style.  The Biot Midge has a wonderful striated body with a fan head and it represents the perfect midge that hatches on the water.  You can dry fly fish Idaho at all elevations with the Biot Midge, but it is a targeted fly for trout in non peak fishing seasons.  When it starts to get late in the year on your local waters and the water flows go down dramatically, that is when the conditions are perfect to dry fly fish the Biot Midge.  If you are dry fly fishing Idaho in the high mountain elevations, the Biot Midge is a perfect fly to tie on if the hatches have yet to start.

Dry Fly Innovations ties the Biot Midge in sizes #22 and #20.  The Biot Midge is effective on all species of trout and can be fished on any lake, river, stream, or creek.  The Biot Midge can be fished in any weather conditions, but there is one rule of thumb: the colder the temperature, the more this particular midge hatch will be prevalent on the waters.  If you are dry fly fishing Idaho right now, the Biot Midge would be a great fly to tie on your tippet because the weather in late November through December is ideal.  So do not put that fly pole away quite yet because there is a whole new season of dry fly fishing Idaho right now with the Biot Midge.

Curly Caddis Green- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

Tuesday, December 1, 2009
posted by geoff

Dry fly fishing Idaho in the spring or summer seasons there is one particular caddis fly I make sure I have in my box and that is a Curly Caddis Green.  Idaho waters are notorious for caddis hatches but sometimes you will be in those hatches but not have that one particular fly that the trout are keying in on.  That is why I recommend to all anglers that dry fly fish Idaho to be prepared for all hatches that could go on that particular day.  The Curly Caddis Green is an awesome caddis pattern with double wing constructed of CDC and mallard, striated body, and graceful tentacles curling upward and back from the head. It floats like a bobber with hook down, wing up, and it will fool some really, really smart fish.  Do not hesitate if you are in a caddis hatch to tie the Curly Caddis Green on and watch the magic happen before you.

Dry Fly Innovations ties the Curly Caddis Green in sizes #16 2XL and #14 2XL.  The Curly Caddis Green can be effectively dry fly fished throughout Idaho at all elevations, but we have had the most success with this fly on rivers and streams.  The one big advantage of the Curly Caddis Green is that it can be fished in harder current where you are not limited to slow or slack water.  While dry fly fishing Idaho with the Curly Caddis Green you can catch all species of trout from giant brown trout to little eastern brooks.  The Curly Caddis Green is an awesome fly to have when you come to dry fly fish Idaho in the spring or summer seasons; make sure you are packing this bad boy!
