Black Gold Hardback Stimulator- Dry Fly Fish Idaho
If you have been following our blogs, you know that we have been writing about our fly catalog. And one of our premier flies that we have already talked about was the Black Gold Stimulator. Black Gold Stimulator is hands down the best attractor fly I have ever used. You can dry fly fish Idaho from high mountain streams to the South Fork of the Boise River and just catch fish like a gill net. We are going one step further today and introducing the counter part of Black Gold Stimulator and that is Black Gold Hardback. There are a few subtle differences between the two, but despite these differences, both the Black Golds are rainbow catching machines. With the Black Gold Hardback there is no polymer hackle which means this fly will have a belly down presentation in the water with the wing sticking up. Black Gold Hardback is designed to fish in slow currents; back eddies, and slack waters. This is the one major difference between the two Black Golds, because only the Black Gold stimulator can be fished in any waters, fast or slow. Black Gold Hardback can effectively be used to dry fly fish Idaho in the early spring to late summer and it was designed to imitate the spring stonefly hatches that come off.
Dry Fly Innovations ties this fly in two sizes (#12 2XL and #10 2XL). If your plans for dry fly fishing Idaho bring you in the spring or summer seasons, Black Gold Hardback needs to be in your repertoire. Black Gold Hardback has a beautiful olive brown body with a moose hair wing, which gives this fly amazing life like color properties to the real hatch. You can dry fly fish Idaho anywhere that there is a stonefly hatch and it will catch all species of trout Idaho has to offer. There is one more important aspect I must mention about the Black Gold Hardback and that is it can be used effectively as a stimulator pattern, which means there does not need to be a hatch in order to use it. In the long summer days of Idaho Black Gold Hardback can lure in some big rainbows from the depths of the river, but just remember it is a hair pattern that requires some gink or floatant. Come dry fly fish Idaho with Black Gold Hardback and experience some of the greatest blue ribbon rivers in the world.
Peacock Caddis- Dry Fly Fish Idaho
One of the greatest stimulator patterns I have ever used dry fly fishing Idaho in the late summer early fall is the Peacock Caddis. This stately fly is big and juicy and it absolutely drives trout crazy. The peacock that you spin around the hook gives a color property that is unlike any other color fly because it is iridescent. The Peacock Caddis also comes equipped with a coastal deer wing that makes this fly float on the water like a cork. You can dry fly fish Idaho at any elevation and it can be used on any creek, river, stream, or lake. The Peacock Caddis does not imitate any particular caddis hatch so we at Dry Fly Innovations consider this fly a stimulator pattern, but you can throw it in any caddis hatch or at no hatch at all! One of the better fishing days I had on the South Fork of the Boise River this summer was with the Peacock Caddis. I would cast it real close to the river bank, and float it around the big boulders and the other structure that are in the river. Let me tell you the rainbows just could not resist the Peacock Caddis. On this particular day there were no hatches coming off except a PMD mayfly and that was about an hour before dark. I strapped on the Peacock Caddis at about 11:00 AM, and I had fish at the hook all afternoon until I switched up to the PMD mayfly. I cannot say enough good things about the Peacock Caddis; it is just an all out fish magnet.
Dry Fly Innovations offers the Peacock Caddis in two sizes (#16 2XL and #14 2XL). The Peacock caddis will effectively catch any and all species of trout that Idaho has to offer. When you are dry fly fishing Idaho with the Peacock Caddis you will need to be equipped with gink or floatant because it does have a hair wing that will require gink on both the wing and the hackle around the eye of the hook. The Peacock Caddis is an amazing fly all summer long, but if your fly fishing trip this summer brings you to dry fly fish Idaho in the late summer early fall, I would not hit any stretches of water unless I was packing the Peacock Caddis!
Yellow Humpilator- Dry Fly Fish Idaho
If you are the type of fly fishing enthusiast that likes to use big plump attractor flies to lure in the big fish from the depths, than I have a great fly for you. We at Dry Fly Innovations would like to introduce the Yellow Humpilator. This is a great summertime fly to dry fly fish Idaho with on any river scenario. Unfortunately the Yellow Humpilator is not much of a lake fly, but it is an amazing river fly! You can effectively dry fly fish Idaho in the high mountain rivers and streams or you can dry fly fish the South Fork of the Boise River or the Owyhee River. The real beauty of the Yellow Humpilator is you do not need a hatch to effectively use it. There is no real hatch that the Yellow Humpilator imitates so you can tie this fly on at anytime and catch fish. The Yellow Humpilator is a fail proof fly that no matter how you cast, it will always land perfect because of the standard hook down wing up design of all Dry Fly Innovations humpilators.
Dry Fly Innovations offers the Yellow Humpilator in four sizes (#16, #14, #12, and #10). If you are planning a back packing trip to dry fly Idaho high mountain rivers I would strongly suggest using #16 or #14. If your summer plans are bringing you to dry fly fish the South Fork of the Boise River or Owyhee River than I would opt for #12 or #10. The Yellow Humpilator has a big plump body with a hard back and it rides high in the water. You will have no problems seeing this fly on the river even if you are a long caster, but it is a hair pattern so gink will be necessary for proper use. You can dry fly fish Idaho anywhere (on rivers) and catch all species of trout that Idaho has to offer. Make a fun summer trip to dry fly fish Idaho with the Yellow Humpilator and plan on having a sore shoulder because it will get a good workout!
Red and Black Ant- Dry Fly Fish Idaho
Since we have been writing about our fly catalog we have spoke a lot about universal flies that you can use at all elevations and on any types of waters. The Red and Black Ant is the absolute epitome of the universal fly. You can dry fly fish Idaho at all mountain elevations and you can slid into any low elevation river, like the South Fork of the Boise River, with the Red and Black Ant and be successful. I have spent all my life dry fly fishing Idaho high mountain ranges and the number one tie on fly I always choose is the Red and Black Ant. It is the most deadly fly for high mountain trout because most of their diet consists of terrestrials such as the Red and Black Ant, beetles, and black ants. The beauty of this fly is you do not have to be in tight on the edges or under vegetation, you can effectively dry fly fish anywhere on the water and trout will come to the red and Black Ant. Another important aspect of this fly is it can be fished dry or slightly wet under the waters film. I admit it is a lot more fun when the fly is big and dry sitting on the water, but most of my success with a Red and Black Ant has come from not using any gink and letting it sink just below the waters surface. If you are dry fly fishing this way you will need to watch for any rings or dimples at the surface because the fish will not break the water when they take, their movements will create only a dapple at your hook. If you see this, set the hook because you are going to have a fish on.
Dry Fly Innovations ties the Red and Black Ant in two sizes (#18 and #16). When dry fly fishing Idaho in the high mountain elevations this is a great fly to use because it is one size smaller than the flying black ant and sometimes high mountain trout have a tendency to eat smaller bugs and flies. You can effectively dry fly fish Idaho on all stretches of water and it will catch all species of trout. I cannot tell you how many commercial ants I have purchased over my lifetime (before I started tying my own) and they all ended up the same way. After two fish it is a ball of dubbing that does not even look like a bug. Dry Fly Innovations ties the Red and Black Ant to have tightly wound oblong body segments, beautifully crafted wings, and present themselves exactly like the natural. They have no deer hair shells over the tail so they are tough and won’t fray or break. We take great pride in making top notch dry flies and the Red and Black Ant is no exception, you will break it off in a fish’s mouth or on a tree before you wear out a Dry Fly Innovations Red and Black Ant. This summer get out of the city and all the monotony and dry fly fish Idaho mountain lakes with a Red and Black Ant, you will have a fishing trip of a lifetime.
Gray Hardshell Caddis- Dry Fly Fish Idaho
Have you ever been on a river or a lake and all of a sudden you see hundreds of big gray caddis’s start to hatch? I have been in these hatches hundreds of times and I always think in my head, “What can I strap on my tippet to catch a fish?” Dry Fly Innovations has a fly that will fit your needs when you are in these fishing conditions. The Gray Hardshell Caddis is an amazing summer season caddis that you can dry fly fish Idaho with at all elevations and can be effectively fished on any types of water. You can fish it on high mountain lakes and streams and you can go to the South Fork of the Boise River or the Owyhee River and catch fish. The second that you are dry fly fishing Idaho and the gray caddis hatch starts, that is your cue to strap on the Gray Hardshell Caddis.
Dry Fly Innovations ties this fly in three sizes (#14 2XL, #12 2XL, and #10 2XL). The construction of this fly is very important to talk about because it has a turkey tent outer wing and on the under wing it has cdc. That gives it a wonderful fuzzy look, and the feather stem and hackle dress up the thorax and head. The Gray Hardshell Caddis is a great summer time fly that can be dry fly fished throughout Idaho at any time. Like other flies that Dry Fly Innovations ties, I would recommend using a #14 2XL on high mountain Idaho lakes, and use the #12 2XL and #10 2XL on lower rivers and streams. If you are coming to Idaho to dry fly fish in the summer seasons and you want to catch fish effectively try the Gray Hardshell Caddis. If your coming to dry fly fish Idaho in the summer to just practice casting, than do not worry about having this fly in your box. But I am sure you are like me and when I hit the waters there is blood in my eye and I am ready to fool some big intelligent trout. This is why I always pack a Gray Hardshell Caddis in my fly box when I go to dry fly fish Idaho.
Halloween Hardback- Dry Fly Fish Idaho
If you are coming to Idaho to dry fly fish and there is a squala hatch coming off, I have the perfect fly for you. Dry Fly Innovations has created a masterpiece in the Halloween Hardback. Very effective in the late spring and early summer, the Halloween Hardback can be a devastating fly on brown and rainbow trout. The Halloween Hardback will look and fish a lot like a humpy pattern, but there are a few subtle differences. The hardback on the Halloween is done with moose hair, and the abdomen, which is wound with orange dubbing, gives this fly almost life-like qualities. There is no polymer hackle on Halloween Hardback so you will need to dry fly fish it in tail waters and on big slicks. It is not meant to fish the hard waters like its counter part Halloween Stone.
Dry Fly Innovations ties this fly in two different sizes (#12 2XL and #10 2XL). If you are coming to dry fly fish Idaho in the high mountain ranges I would not recommend using Halloween Hardback, but there is a fly that is designed after Halloween Hardback and that is the Orange Humpy. The Orange Humpy comes in size #16 and #14, which would be ideal if your plans to dry fly fish Idaho in the higher elevations. Halloween Hardback will catch all species of trout that Idaho has to offer, and it can be fished in tandem with Slow Stone or Halloween Stone. Halloween Hardback can also be an effective pattern if used just like a stimulator in the summer seasons, where there are no hatches coming off and you are trying to drum a big fish from the depths. Grab your fly pole and come dry fly fish Idaho with a Halloween Hardback in the late spring and summer seasons.
PMD Stimulator – Dry Fly Fishing Idaho
One of the most predominant hatches that come off in Idaho in the late spring and through summer is the PMD mayfly. To meet that hatch Dry Fly Innovations created the PMD stimulator. In the creation of the PMD Stimulator, Dry Fly Innovations went one step further by making it able to be dry fly fished throughout Idaho whenever there is a PMD mayfly hatch. I have spoke to many dry fly fisher enthusiasts, and for the most part they all have the same approach, the bigger the fly the better. When you are fishing any mayfly pattern there is a good chance it is going to be in the range of size #22- #18. Some mayfly patterns get as big as #16, but for the most part mayflies are fished on small hook sizes. So if you find yourself dry fly fishing Idaho in a PMD mayfly hatch and hate to tie on a small fly, the PMD Stimulator is here to the rescue you. The PMD Stimulator is a big attractor fly that is a great substitute for the PMD mayfly hatch because in its construction it has an elk hair wing coming off its back at a perfect 45 degree angle. Due to the angle of the wing construction, the PMD Stimulator looks identical to a large PMD mayfly, and the color combinations match it perfectly as well.
Dry Fly Innovations has created the PMD Stimulator in two sizes (#16 2XL and #14 2XL) and it can be effectively dry fly fished in Idaho on all low elevation rivers and streams. You can pretty well count on one thing if there is a PMD mayfly hatch coming off anywhere: you can substitute the PMD Stimulator. It will catch all species of trout that Idaho has to offer, and because of its several turns of hackle, the PMD Stimulator will float like a cork in any water conditions. It is a hair pattern so gink will need to be a necessity to dry fly fish Idaho effectively. So come enjoy a good Idaho dry fly fishing experience this summer with a PMD Stimulator from Dry Fly Innovations, you will not be disappointed.
Adams Stimulator- Dry Fly Fish Idaho
One of the all time great summer time fishing flies is the Adams Stimulator. This fly can be dry fly fished all throughout Idaho at all mountain elevations and all low elevation rivers and streams. One of the greatest features on the Adams Stimulator is that it has the standard Dry Fly Innovations hook down wing up while floating on the water. It has several wraps of hackle on its body, which makes this fly float like a cork when dry fly fishing Idaho. I have personally fished this fly in the high mountains of Idaho and have caught fish like a pro, but the best part of this fly is it can be dry fly fished on still waters and on fast current rivers. You can literally dry fly fish Idaho with the Adams Stimulator and have some of the best fishing days of your life.
Dry Fly Innovations ties the Adams Stimulator in two different sizes (#16 2XL and #14 2XL). What sets the Adams Stimulator apart from all the other patterns is that we tie the wing with coastal deer hair, which gives its wing a dark look close to the head and a cream color look at the end of the wing. The Adams Stimulator is a magnificent fly to dry fly fish Idaho with in the summer seasons. There is no particular hatch that you need to see on the water for the Adams Stimulator to be effective so the Adams Stimulator can be tied on at any time and it will land more fish than a gill net. If you have plans for dry fly fishing Idaho next summer, I would strongly suggest picking up some Adams Stimulators. It is flat out a “dirty fly” on all species of trout.
Halloween Stone- Dry Fly Fish Idaho
If you are coming to Idaho to dry fly fish Silver Creek, the South Fork of the Snake River, the South Fork of the Boise River, or the Owyhee River, I have just the fly for you. Halloween Stone is one of most effective dry flies I have ever thrown at a German Brown trout. It is meant to imitate the early squala hatches in the early spring season from March to April. The unfortunate thing about the Halloween Stone is the hatch does not last that long; it is a very short season using any fly that imitates a squala. One of the best aspects of Halloween Stone is that you can fish it in hard current or tail waters because it is designed to float like a cork. It is spun with several wraps of hackle and has a wing made died black elk hair. The under wing of Halloween is died orange deer hair that gives this fly one of the most amazing reflective properties on a fly. If I was a betting man I would go all in with Halloween because it is a dry fly fishing phenomenon throughout the state of Idaho.
Halloween Stone is tied on five different sizes (#16 2XL, #14 2XL, #12 2XL, #10 2XL, and #8 2XL). The reason Dry Fly Innovations makes this fly in so many sizes is that it is effective on rainbows on the South Fork of the Boise River in the late summer and early fall on the smaller sizes, while Halloween is absolutely devastating on browns in the early spring fished on a #8 2XL, #10 2XL, or a #12 2XL. Halloween can be fished all throughout the summer when you are dry fly fishing Idaho because it is designed just like a stimulator pattern with one difference of antennas protruding out the front. If you are a little skeptical of the Halloween Stone we made a video called Fly Magic: Fishing with Halloween and Slow Stone. In this video it is just one big brown being caught after another using just these two flies on the Owyhee River (60 minutes from Meridian) in Oregon. If your plans for fly fishing bring you to dry fly fish Idaho or Montana make sure you are packing Halloween Stone because it is a fish catching machine wherever there is a squala hatch coming off!

CDC Wrights Royal- Dry Fly Fish Idaho
If you are dry fly fishing Idaho in the summer seasons I have just the fly that could potentially catch you a lot of fish when the conditions are right. From guide Dave Tucker owner of Dreams on the Fly, introducing one of the best summer flies out there, the CDC Wrights Royal. Dave Tucker created this fly himself, and if you know anything about Idaho guides, the name Dave Tucker is legendary because he has been a fly fishing guide for over 25 years. The CDC Wrights Royal is a spin off of the classic Royal Coachman, but Dave went one step further and added a CDC wing making an ordinary fly extraordinary. This fly is an attractor fly that can be effectively dry fly fished in Idaho with or without a hatch. If there is a caddis hatch coming off (everyday in Idaho during summer seasons) the CDC Wrights Royal is the perfect choice to tie on because it will imitate a caddis profile. Do not hesitate to throw on a CDC Wrights Royal next summer when you are dry fly fishing Idaho.
Dry Fly Innovations offers the CDC Wrights Royal in three sizes (#16, #14, and #12). The CDC Wrights Royal can effectively be dry fly fished throughout Idaho at all elevations and on all river and streams. This fly will also catch all species of trout that Idaho has to offer and the CDC Wrights Royal will float like a cork in the water while doing so. Just like previous blogs about our flies, when you are dry fly fishing Idaho in the high mountains I would opt for #16 or #14. If I was dry fly fishing the South Fork of the Boise River or any other river I would choose #12. Come dry fly fish one of the most beautiful states in the USA and pick up your CDC Wrights Royals because it is an amazing fly.
