Renegade Stimulator Dry Fly Fish Idaho

Monday, November 30, 2009
posted by geoff

If you have been a fly fishing enthusiast for awhile, then you are probably very familiar with the old renegade stimulator pattern.  Dry Fly Innovations has stepped up the renegade pattern into another league.  The Renegade Stimulator is equipped with a fat peacock body, white abdomen hackle, and brown collar hackle.  Where we have made the biggest modification to the Renegade Stimulator is we added a wing to it and now it is a fish catching machine.  When dry fly fishing Idaho the Renegade Stimulator is primarily used during the spring and summer seasons, but the real advantage is you can fish it at anytime.  The Renegade is a stimulator pattern, which means you do not need a bug hatch to fish this fly effectively.

Dry Fly Innovations ties the Renegade Stimulator in a #16 2XL and #14 2XL.  You can dry fly fish Idaho effectively using the Renegade Stimulator on high mountain lakes, streams, or rivers.  The Renegade Stimulator will catch all species of trout.  One of the great advantages of the Renegade Stimulator is that you can fish it on still water or on moving water, which is quite different than most stimulator patterns.  Because we have added a wing to the Renegade Stimulator it is much more buoyant than the old style renegade, and it will basically sit on the water like a cork.  The Renegade Stimulator is a hair style pattern that will require gink to use at optimum efficiency.  So when you come to dry fly fish Idaho during the spring/ summer seasons, make sure you are equipped with the Renegade Stimulator in your fly box.

Blue Damsel- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

One of the most amazing flies I have fished in my dry fly fishing career is the Blue Damsel.  If you are dry fly fishing Idaho in the high mountains on still water the Blue Damsel is very effective.  Dry fly fish the Blue Damsel near grass beds, reed beds, or any vegetation hanging over the water.  When the Blue Damsels are hatching you will actually see schools of fish move into the banks waiting for them to fall off the vegetation.  The reason I state that the Blue Damsel is an amazing fly is because you will see the fish jump clear out of the water to eat these bugs.  I have personally seen fish jump a foot out of the water to eat my Blue Damsel.  It is a fun fly to use and a very successful one when the conditions are right.

Dry Fly Innovations ties the Blue Damsel in one size, and that is a #14 2XL on a down eye hook.  The Blue Damsel is designed to float flat on the water to represent that it is spent.  You will need to gink the Z lon that comes off both sides which represent its wings.  The Blue Damsel is designed to dry fly fish Idaho in all elevations, but it needs to be on still water.  High mountain lakes are ideal for the Blue Damsel.  When you are dry fly fishing Idaho lakes and you see damsels start to appear, do not hesitate to tie on the Blue Damsel and fish it tight in against the banks.  The Blue Damsel will fool all species of trout so come dry fly fish Idaho lakes and tie on the Blue Damsel; because it is an experience all dry fly fishing enthusiasts should have.

Dry Fly Innovations has invented a true gem to the dry fly fishing world, and that is the Squirrel Humpy.  Dry Fly Innovations is the only place where you will find a Squirrel Humpy and it is designed to dry fly fish Idaho supremely.  The Squirrel Humpy has a plump small body and the squirrel hair gives it an orange color that is absolutely irresistible to trout.  It has awesome floating abilities employing the Dry Fly Innovations standard: hook down and wing up.  It is a dry fly fisher’s best friend on the water.  The Squirrel Humpy is an attractor fly so there is no real hatch that it imitates, but it catches fish in a serious way.  When using the Squirrel Humpy on the water you will need to gink the tail, wing, and hackle to fish it effectively.

You can dry fly fish Idaho with the Squirrel Humpy from early spring to early fall.  Dry Fly Innovations ties this pattern in two sizes, in a #14 and #16.  The Squirrel Humpy can be dry fly fished throughout Idaho at all elevations on any lake, stream, river, or creek.  It will catch all species of trout, which makes this pattern another universal fly pattern to have in your fly box that you can go to at any time.  Check out the Squirrel Humpy at Dry Fly Innovations and come dry fly fish Idaho.  Tie on the Squirrel Humpy and you will be saying, “There he is!”

Blue Dun Stimulator- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

If you are coming to dry fly fish Idaho in the summer, or if Idaho waters are your native waters, let me introduce you to a fish catching machine.  The Blue Dun stimulator is a dynamite fly at all elevations and on all species of fish.  You can dry fly fish Idaho practically anywhere you desire and catch fish with the Blue Dun stimulator.  It is constructed with very light gray materials and is meant to imitate a light gray caddis or a large gray mayfly.  The Blue Dun stimulator is very easy to fish because it floats high on the water.  This pattern is a hair fly, which means you will need to gink the hackle and the wing to make the Blue Dun stimulator fish effectively.

Dry Fly Innovations offers the Blue Dun stimulator in two sizes, a #16 2XL and #14 2XL.  When you are dry fly fishing Idaho it is very important to pack your fly box with effective attractor patterns like the Blue Dun stimulator.  There are several hatches that come off on Idaho waters like caddis’s and mayflies, and if you do not have those particular patterns in your fly box you will not be hooking fish.  I have dry fly fished Idaho my whole life from local rivers to high mountain lakes and I always pack a Blue Dun stimulator with me because this fly is flat out nasty on all species of fish.  When you dry fly fishing Idaho next summer, make sure you have an ace in your fly box like the Blue Dun stimulator.

Brown Emerger- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

This collection of emergers from Dry Fly Innovations always amazes me.  They are small and simple, but fish eat them like hors d’oeuvres before a big meal.  For every adult midge and mayfly hatch, there is an emerger that precedes them and they collect by the millions at the surface.  When you see the dimple of a trout and not his nose, it’s “Emerger Time.”  Identify the color and tie on a Dry Fly Innovations emerger and let the party begin!  You can dry fly fish Idaho with the Brown Emerger effectively during any season of the year.

The Brown Emerger is tied on #22 2XL and #20.  This particular fly is quite small and is a little bit more of a challenge to fish, but it can catch fish right along with any large stimulator.  The Brown Emerger is designed to float just under the surface of the water, but you will always see the little bunch of hair coming off the eye of the hook which are designed to represent antennas that will develop later on a young bug.  The Brown Emerger is perfect for dry fly fishing Idaho in the early spring and in the late fall/winter.  This fly will catch all species of trout and can be used at any elevation on any river, stream, or lake.  When you are dry fly fishing Idaho and you find yourself in a hatch that is not on the surface put a Brown Emerger on and soon you will be feeling the burn as you pull in one trout after another!

Bare Belly Caddis- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

Wednesday, November 18, 2009
posted by geoff

One of the most common hatches in the state of Idaho is of a small caddis.  They come off at all elevations and on all rivers and streams.  Because of how common and widespread these hatches are, all species of trout will take a caddis.  The Bare Belly Caddis is designed to mimic these little bugs and the trout love them.  Do not be deceived by the innocent look and small size of this fly…it is flat-out nasty. The striated body lays flat in the surface film and the dark elk wing suspends it at nose level to the fish.  There is no polymer hackle on the Bare Belly Caddis, which causes it lie so low on the water and what makes it so effective when dry fly fishing.

Dry Fly Innovations ties the Bare Belly Caddis in three different colors, brown, gray, and green.  It also comes in two different sizes in their respective colors, #20 and #18.  The great part of the Bare Belly Caddis is you can successfully dry fly fish Idaho from the early spring to the end of summer.  We at Dry Fly Innovations talk a lot about versatility of flies and how you can use a particular fly in numerous scenarios and the Bare Belly Caddis is no exception.  One of the best fishing days I have ever had on the Owyhee River (catching brown trout) was with a #20 Bare Belly Caddis.  The Bare Belly Caddis fishes outstandingly in the high country this year where we dry fly fished Idaho in several locations, and this fly flat out rose to the occasion.  When you are dry fly fishing Idaho from early spring into the summer the Bare Belly Caddis should be in your fly box in all colors and sizes.

Olive Stone- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

Tuesday, November 17, 2009
posted by geoff

One of the best times to come dry fly fish Idaho is in the early spring when the squala hatch is just coming off and you have an Olive Stone strapped to the end of your tippet.  Early spring stoneflies will often begin hatching with strong overtones of orange subtly oozing from their bodies.  But as the hatch lengthens, a muted olive color will begin to appear on the underbelly of the bug.  The Olive Stone fly matches this hatch perfectly.  Like all flies that imitate a squala, there is a very short window in which this fly can be used.  The window is about a month long running from March to April.

When dry fly fishing Idaho with an Olive Stone you can fish this fly on any river or stream and it works effectively in hard current or soft.  The Olive Stone will catch all species of trout, but the browns will key on this fly because the squala hatch is what they predominately eat.  If you find yourself dry fly fishing Idaho in the summer you can also use the Olive Stone as a stimulator pattern.  The Olive Stone comes in three sizes, #12, #10, and #8.  The Olive Stone is a hair pattern, which will require you to use gink on it’s under wing and body.  When you are dry fly fishing Idaho in the early spring, make sure you have your Olive Stone in your fly box and fasten your seatbelt because it could be a wild ride.

Gray Mayfly- Dry Fly Fish Idaho

Monday, November 16, 2009
posted by geoff

To dry fly fish Idaho successfully, you must own the finest, most perfect, most realistic, most precise mayflies. The collection of mayflies that Dry Fly Innovations carries have been masterly crafted after over 40 years of research and development (my term for fishing). We believe that fish target on a mayfly by the bug’s abdomen and the wing, and a subtle difference in either is the determining factor in a take.  The Gray Mayfly is constructed with a single upright wing that has been hand carved to match the actual mayfly in the wild, and a biot abdomen which gives it a striated body.

You can dry fly fish Idaho in all elevations and on all species of fish with the Gray Mayfly.  In the higher elevations it imitates a mosquito hatch and in the lower elevations it matches all the little gray mayflies that come off.  The Gray Mayfly is essential to any fly box if you are coming to dry fly fish Idaho, because Idaho waters are notorious for gray mayfly hatches.  You can use the Gray Mayfly from early spring through the summer and into the early fall.  The Gray Mayfly is a very versatile fly and one that I would highly recommend you have when you come to dry fly fish Idaho.

Dry Fly Innovations ties the Gray Mayfly in two different sizes, a #18 and in a #16. It also comes in two separate wing colors, quill and clear.  When you are dry fly fishing Idaho with a Gray Mayfly and the sun is shining bright, go with the clear wing.  When you are in overcast conditions, in shade, or heading into dark, the Gray Mayfly with a quill wing would be your choice.  Come dry fly fish Idaho with a Gray Mayfly and experience mayfly fishing at its best.
